2010 MAZDASPEED3 - KONI Challenge Spec
MAZDASPEED & SpeedSource Announce Latest Mazda Racer
October 3, 2009 (Irvine, Calif). Racers know that the most popular car at any given road course is certain to be Mazda powered. The engine and car vary by series, but more Mazdas are road-raced than any other brand. The RX-8 with the legendary Mazda rotary has been a mainstay of the Rolex Grand-Am GT series. The Mazda MZR engine, which has its roots in the MX-5 Miata powers a range of racecars from the entire field of Playboy Mazda MX-5 Cup and Swift-Atlantic cars to the wickedly fast BP Dyson Lola-Mazda in the ALMS LMP2 category. The key is in matching the right car and powertrain with the right series.
For 2010, Mazda has identified a new opportunity, entering the all-new MAZDASPEED3 five-door in the hotly contested KONI Challenge series in the Street Tuner (ST) class. MAZDASPEED engineers will work in partnership with SpeedSource to develop the car with all parts and information shared with all Mazda customers.
The car: The KONI Challenge Spec MAZDASPEED3 will feature a "crate stock engine" with a sealed factory ECU. All SpeedSource developed parts will be sold through MAZDASPEED Motorsports Development. This will ensure the same level of customer support that has made the RX-8 the car of choice in the Rolex Grand-Am GT championship. The street going MAZDASPEED3 has a standard 263hp turbocharged Mazda MZR engine and has a base MSRP of $23,945.
The series: The KONI Challenge Street Tuner (ST) class utilizes production based race cars and has a wide variety of vehicles from the U.S., Europe, and Japan. The series uses weight and intake restrictions to maintain a level playing field for all entrants. Over the past two seasons a variety of MX-5's and RX-8's have been raced in the class.
The contingency plan: Noting the large fields that have been the hallmark of the KONI Challenge, Mazda will continue to pay contingency beyond the normal "top-three" positions, rewarding any Mazda team that can place in the top-six in any KONI Challenge race. Payments will be $4,000 for a win, $2500 for a second, $1500 for a third, and $750 for finishes fourth through sixth. An additional $12,000 bonus will be paid if Mazda secures the manufacturers championship.
Sylvain Tremblay, SpeedSource Inc. "We are focusing our effort to have the 2010 MAZDASPEED3 as one of the most cost effective cars raced in the KONI Championship, not just on the purchase price of a turn-key race car, but on the running costs and the costs of parts to support the program. With the MAZDASPEED3, Mazda has built the best 'bang for the buck', hot hatchback on the market. Our job is the do the same for the racing version of the great car."
Steve Sanders, MAZDASPEED Motorsports "The greatest complement we receive is when racers chose to buy our products to race. Our goal is to provide the best possible engineering and parts support, along with a best in class contingency program. SpeedSource has a proven record with Mazda and we know that Sylvain Tremblay and his team will deliver a great product. We are excited about racing the MAZDASPEED3 in 2010 as the car will be going head-to-head with many of the same cars that our customers cross-shop."
Derrick Whitis, Freedom AutoSport "With our success racing the MX-5 Miata, we look forward to applying this knowledge to the new MAZDASPEED3 in 2010. We will be campaigning a multi-car effort and welcome funded drivers to join our program."
David Spitzer, Grand-Am "The KONI Challenge has over a dozen makes and models competing for the most diverse grid in racing. We are happy to welcome the new MAZDASPEED3 to the series."
Mazda is the brand of choice for road-racers across North America. More than 9,000 grassroots racers compete in various classes with the Sports Car Club of America (SCCA) and the National Auto Sport Association (NASA). Racers who are years away from earning a driver's license can now begin a professional motorsports careers in the Mazda family. A driver can begin in karts and progress through the Skip Barber series, Club Racing Formula Mazda, professional Star Mazda and finally to Formula Atlantic, all with Mazda. No other car company has ever connected the dots this way.
On any given weekend, there are more Mazdas on the road-race tracks of America than any other brand of vehicle. At the track, you'll see MX-5 Miata, RX-8, MAZDA3, MAZDA6, RX-7 and other vintage Mazda models competing, because every Mazda has the Soul of a Sports Car. In fact, the largest road-racing class in the world is Spec Miata, with more than 1,500 first- and second-generation Miatas tearing up America's racetracks, making it the most-raced production car in the world. Mazda's involvement in motorsports extends to its relationship with Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca, one of the world's premier road-racing circuits, and the Skip Barber Schools for driving and racing.
Celebrating its 40th Anniversary in the United States in 2010, Mazda North American Operations is headquartered in Irvine, Calif. and oversees the sales, marketing, parts and customer service support of Mazda vehicles in the United States, Canada and Mexico through nearly 900 dealers. Operations in Canada are managed by Mazda Canada, Inc., located in Ontario; and in Mexico by Mazda Motor de Mexico in Mexico City.
